JOB SUMMARY
Serves as a strategic member of the Office of Elementary Reading and Integrated Literacy team to write curriculum and provide direct support and assistance to schools to accelerate reading and literacy instruction for all students. Once the process is complete, the position may be redirected to another department or eliminated whereby the teacher will return to classroom positions or other instructional positions in the school system.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supports elementary school administrators in building their capacity for reading and integrated literacy instruction.
  • Assists teachers and administrators in implementing a balanced approach to reading and literacy by modeling collaborative and instructional planning, establishing quality learning environment, instructional delivery with pre- and post- discussion/analysis, assessment development, protocols, effective grading practices, analysis of student work and student performance data.
  • Guides elementary reading teachers to improve their capacity to improve reading and literacy effectiveness across the curriculum for all student groups.
  • Designs and writes e-curriculum materials and assessments designed for elementary grade levels; serves on committees to review, modify, develop and/or evaluate reading/language arts/integrated literacy materials.
  • Creates district-wide summative and formative assessments in ELA.
  • Prepares and manages e-curriculum resources in reading/language arts/literacy for elementary teachers through an online curriculum management delivery system.
  • Works with multiple curriculum offices to infuse Advanced Learner Program (ALPS), arts integration, and STEM strategies across the curricula.
  • Visits schools to provide feedback on teaching methods; assists with curricular related issues, program planning and implementation, evaluates programs and develops modifications to improve effectiveness.
  • Collaborates with the coordinator to analyze state and district testing program data and reviews results with reading teachers and principals.
  • Facilitates professional development for elementary reading teachers to improve their capacity for reading and literacy instruction; supports teachers with the Common Core State Standards.
  • Provides training to the division’s instructional coaches in reading/language arts/literacy to support their ability to build teacher capacity.
  • Collaborates with multiple central office services to design integrated strategies to target individual school needs.
  • Supports the coordinator with assisting schools with the articulation process between grade levels.
  • Supports the coordinator with providing extended day and year reading and literacy programs to maintain and accelerate literacy skills.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education
  • Master's Degree in applicable field of education from a regionally accredited college or university required.
Experience
  • Five (5) years successful teaching experience required.

  • Knowledge of current trends and research in eliminating the achievement gap, curriculum, reading instruction, integrated literacy, Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards, school innovation and school improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability in data analysis, assessment, building teacher capacity, and professional development delivery methods.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Employs technology into instruction and professional development such as document cameras, presenters, and SmartBoards, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite -Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).
Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
  • Hold or be eligible for Educator Certification: Standard Professional Certificate I (SPC I) issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required; or
  • Hold or be eligible for Educator Certification: Standard Professional Certificate II (SPC II) issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required.
  • Hold or be eligible for Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required; and
  • Daily access to reliable transportation.

  • Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business that is within the scope of employment in this position.
