The Mission

The Thermo Fisher NanoPort primary mission is to support sales of all Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy products through demonstrations and serves as a meeting place for Thermo Fisher Applications Scientists and customers to collaborate using NanoPort demo instruments. For all these functions, the performance of the microscopes to the highest standards and general functioning and appearance of the NanoPort lab is critical!

The Position

The Technical Application Specialist is responsible for organizing the installation of new microscopes (SEM, FIB, TEM, XPS, etc.), as well as servicing and repair of advanced equipment and systems. Investigates and approves operational quality and uptime of system equipment. Works in close collaboration with the Application Scientists in the NanoPort team to obtain results of the highest standard in an extraordinary environment.

Responsibilities and deliverables include:
  • Keep NanoPort demo systems’ uptime measured to 85% or above
  • Orchestrate installation of complex equipment and follow testing procedures to ensure proper working order, conduct preventive maintenance work, and provide troubleshooting and repair support
  • Cultivate and develop positive working relationships with system users
  • Liaise with colleagues globally to enhance exchange of specific knowledge, collaborate with product quality teams to improve our products, provide appropriate input in writing updating and correcting various EM system documentation, and input for various reports including identifying and isolating unique problems with system
  • Act as a subject expert and resource for training
The Requirements

This position is ideal for an experienced service engineer wanting to be involved with a diverse team and exposed to a constant variety of customer application areas.

The successful candidate will possess the following combination of education and experience:

  • Typically requires a technical degree or equivalent experience in electronic system troubleshooting
  • Typically requires 2-7 years hands on technical experience installing, troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating complex analysis tools such as SEM, TEM, FIB or similar systems
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing ultra-high vacuum and high voltage systems is highly desired
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to deal effectively with colleagues and customers
  • Team proficiency development and talent pipeline buildout
  • Proven track record to troubleshooting advanced systems and subsystems down to component level
  • Literate in MS DOS and Windows software environments and able to read and interpret schematics
  • Be able to prioritize support requests, work on multiple actions in parallel and self-organize
