GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Contributes to the companyâs mission and vision by utilizing the nursing process in planning, executing, and evaluating the nursing care rendered postoperatively until patient is dismissed from the facility. Responsible for coordinating the environmental control, area staff, assistance to physicians, materials and equipment, education of personnel and all designated administrative duties. Analyzes and evaluates nursing services to improve quality of care provided. Nursing care meets the standards of the profession, the policies and procedures of the Center, and is appropriate to the Centerâs patient population to identify patient and family needs.
Coordinator Duties:
Coordinates nursing care in the designated clinical unit/department. Ensures sufficient staffing on a daily basis. Notifies staff of scheduling changes in a timely manner. Coordinates and delegates tasks to individuals according to the activities required and staff competency. Assists with managing labor cost by coordinating adequate staffing patterns according to the utilization of the area and keeping an open line of communication with Clinical Director/Manager and Administrator, as per facility practices. Assessable to staff in clinical area and assists with staff and clinical needs i.e. providing breaks, ensure coverage for meal breaks, late cases, and staffing shortages, as required. Monitors to ensure that the clinical area is maintained properly i.e. equipment cleaned and functioning properly. Assists with development of policies/procedures and facility practices, as directed. Responsible for monitoring cli nical staff for compliance with facility policies and practices, procedures, and QI Program (hazardous waste, blood borne pathogens, infection control, etc.) Monitors to ensure timely and accurate medical records documentation. Assist with maintaining proper inventory levels and cost containment. Encourages teamwork among staff. Assists with selection and hire of staff. Exhibits flexibility in self schedule. Assists with employee orientation and performance management. Assists with coordinating staff training/in-services and monitoring to ensure compliance. Handles Pre Op and PACU clinical variances and coordinates follow up with Risk Manager, Center Administrator, and Clinical Director/Manager, as required. Clinical Duties:

o Patient is discharged home with a responsible adult, unless otherwise approved by physician.

Pre Op & PACU
- Demonstrates necessary practical, technical or specialized knowledge and skills required for the role of the pre and post-operative nurse in accordanc e with patient care and regulatory standards of practice.
- Prepares patient care area adequately and ensures availability of necessary equipment and supplies.
- Demonstrates proper airway management techniques (oral airway, extubation, pulse oximetry monitoring, O2 administration, etc.)
- Demonstrates understanding of principles of hemodynamic monitoring and monitors patient according to policy (vital signs, temperature, cardiac, etc.).
- Recognizes signs and symptoms of patientâs condition that indicate potential pre and/or post procedure or anesthesia related complications and report to anesthesiologist immediately.
- Monitors and maintains proper intravenous intake and output.
- Exhibits proper technique for insertion, maintenance, and removal of IV catheters and saline locks.
- Performs head to toe assessment of patient and evaluates patient utilizing approved scoring system upon admission and as indicated by policy.
- D ocuments patient assessment upon admission.
- Checks dressings and/or operative site and reports abnormalities to the surgeon.
- Provides a safe and comforting environment for patient and family pre and post operatively.
- Maintains patient safety at all times by escorting patient when ambulating, attending while changing attire, restraining patient for safety reasons, as needed and in accordance with facility policy, and remaining aware of fall risk protocol.
- Prepares and administers medications in accordance with current practice (i.e. antibiotics, narcotics, preparing/labeling medications, identifying high alert medications, utilizing 7 patient rights for medication administration and appropriate handling of narcotic waste).
- Demonstrates thorough understanding of medications utilized pre, intra and post operatively and recognizes the need for use of reversal drugs, when necessary.
- Recognizes emergency situations and responds effec tively in a calm and controlled manner.
- Prepares patient for transfer to hospital when necessary.
- Assures that patient meets all discharge criteria.
o Written discharge order is received from the attending physician prior to patient discharge.
o Patient is discharged home with a responsible adult, unless otherwise approved by physician.
- Confirms that patient and family receives and verbalizes understanding of written discharge instructions.
- Documents all appropriate patient information in accordance with charting guidelines.
- Conducts patient post procedure calls. Documents and reports to patientâs physician any abnormalities communicated by patient/family member during the follow up call.
EDUCATION:
- Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum 2 year s experience in a PACU or ICU setting; preferably in an ambulatory surgery center.
- Two year supervisor experience.
- Additional specialty experience may be required as per facility practices(i.e. Pediatric, GI, etc)
- Active RN license as required by state of employment.
- Required valid BCLS Certification upon employment. ***online certification not acceptable.
- ACLS, PALS and/or other as required for patient care area and by facility.
