Summary of essential job functions
Prepares patients for examination by obtaining
appropriate history, performing preliminary examination
and arriving at a working diagnosis where appropriate
Assessing patients for development and updating of
treatment plans; implements treatment plans that have
been reviewed and approved by the supervising physician
Identifying normal and abnormal findings on histories,
physical examinations and commonly performed initial
laboratory studies
Presents information obtained in an organiz! ed manner so
the physician can expeditiously evaluate, exa! mine and
outline a medical management plan
Administers prescribed medications as directed;
observes, records and reports patientâs condition and
reaction to drugs and treatments to physician
Prescribes drugs; schedule III, IV and V controlled
substances to the extent permitted by PA state law;
keeps patient pharmacy history current along with drug
allergies
Applies casts, splints and dressings; suturing minor
lacerations, suture and cast removal
Demonstrate competency in utilizing electronic medical
record system in place to provide appropriate, timely
recording of medical progress notes
Provides phone contact as required in certain cases to
assist in patient follow-up and problem solving and
reports such contact to physician supervisor
Ordering of laboratory studies, X-rays, special studies
and other diagnostic tests as appropriate
Interaction with the administrative and nursing staff
assisti! ng in the organized orchestration of the clinic
on a day to day basis
Performs patient education when appropriate
Participates in professional development activities and
maintains professional affiliations
Maintains strict patient confidentiality
Attends annual OSHA, HIPPA and Risk Management training
programs
Attends all regular meetings required to maintain staff
hospital privileges and all required staff meetings
Performs all other tasks and projects assigned by the
Office Manager and/or Dr.
Follows through with patientâs requests within a
reasonable time frame, phones and updates patients as
required.
Prioritize office needs and work demands, requires
little supervision, performs other tasks at as required
and is flexible and able to adjust to changes in
assignments.
Health teaching/education of the patient and the
utilization of appropriate teaching methods related to
age specific fac! tors, as evidenced in medical record
documentation and chart review! s
Works in a self-directed environment with minimal
supervision
Works within approved procedures and clinical guidelines
Has interview/communication skills, nursing assessment
skills, critical thinking/problem solving and
teaching/counseling skills
SURGICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensure that all necessary information on the
surgical patient will be available for the physician
at the surgical facility prior to surgery including
the completion of all necessary paperwork.
Imaging and X-rays on a case-by-case basis will be
properly templated and available.
On the day of surgery the PA will review the surgery
list and verify that all information required to
successfully carry out the procedure is available.
In the surgical suite the PA will assist in bringing
the patient to the operating room, position the
patient on the operating room table, assist the
anesthesiologist or OR staff in preparing the
ope! rating room for the intended surgical procedure,
prepping and draping assistance to be carried out by
the PA to expedite the beginning of the procedure
Acting as surgical first assist in the hospital
setting provided that these physician supervised
procedures have been delineated within the scope of
practice of a physician assistant and approved by
the appropriate committee of the hospital where such
services are to be rendered
Develop familiarity with the procedures performed by
the physician such that appropriate retraction and
manual assistance can be carried out. The PA will
gain such expertise as to be able to direct the
surgical technicians in participating in what is
coming next and what is required in the execution of
the intended surgical procedure
Assist in wound closure and duties required to
complete the surgical procedure and assist the
anesthesiologist and surgical team in bringing the
patient from the operating room to the recovery room
Immediately p! ost-surgery, the PA will help in
completion of the required paperwork as outlined by
the physician including verifying that pain medicine
prescriptions are filled out and available, coding
sheets are completed and information is
appropriately returned to the office in a timely
manner.
Assist in the integration and education of surgical
staff in regards to new technologies and
instrumentation that become part of the physicianâs
surgical practice
Hospital rounding on hospital in-patients, follow-up
care as indicated and approved by supervising
physician
Recording of daily hospital progress notes in the
chart of each hospitalized patient on the service
including labs, vital signs, condition of patient
and wounds and assure that proper discharge planning
is being carried out by appropriate personnel.
Dictate all discharge summaries for patients leaving
the hospital for home or rehab facility in ti! me to
expedite such discharge.
ON CALL RESPONSIBILITIES
Must be available to attend to patients at hospitals to
which physician is covering ER call
Will be âon dutyâ and available to take emergency calls
from practice answering service regarding patients
calling in for help, triage and to provide appropriate
care as needed; communicate to supervising physician
Provides back up to physician first call as delegated by
supervising physician
Must be available to attend to hospitalized patients who
come in for physician during his âon callâ duties on 24
hour basis.
EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in the extra-curricular educational practice
related projects and other educational programs and
seminars that serve the practice. This will include PA
given seminars and presentations.
The PA will assist the physician in developing and
orchestrating such programs and materials a! s required
for the success of the practice in a competitive market !
environment
The PA will be afforded to opportunity to present, speak
publicly and help to develop educational programs
related to the scope of physicianâs orthopaedic practice
as talent permits.
Job Requirements:
PA degree from a prestigious school
2+ yrs surgical experience.
