Location: Saint Augustine, Florida

Department: Outpatient Services

Responsible To: Director of Operating Room Services

Education/Training: BSN preferred. In lieu of BSN, commitment to earn BSN within an established period of time may be required.

Licensure: Valid Florida RN License. BLS and ACLS required.

Experience: Two years experience in OPS or Med/Surgical required.

Skills & Abilities: Ability to handle patient emergency situations; must possess a general working knowledge of the types of Anesthesia and possible reactions to them.

Physical Requirements: Ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time.

Occupational Exposure: Category I = Job involves tasks or procedures that have exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials during the performance of duties.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assesses the number and level of personnel needed to provide quality patient care in the department. Assesses the delivery of nursing care and identifies problems and any need for improvement.

Promotes harmonious relationships and favorable attitudes among the staff. Develops, reviews and revises policies and procedures for the OPS Unit. Ensures the OPS Unit provides a calm reassuring atmosphere and provides for effective communication with each patient’s family to reduce stress.

Evaluates the performance of nursing staff in OPS with the assistance of the Director of OR Services.

Identify and prioritize the needs of the post-anesthesia patient. Exhibits proficiency and knowledge of proper procedure for starting intravenous therapy. Initiate medication therapy with the knowledge of possible interactions with other medication/anesthesia already administered. Initiate treatments as ordered.

Review and check physician pre and post-op orders completing those applying to the OPS setting.

Gives complete report to floor nurse prior to transfer of the patient to other units; a transfer form is also completed. Initiates and participates in life saving measures as indicated.

Maintains a complete and accurate patient OPS record. Demonstrates expertise in the care and use of equipment in the OPS unit. Reports unusual circumstances, patient reaction, to the appropriate individual (i.e. Director of OR Services, anesthesiologist, surgeon, etc.). Completes all patient charges completely.

Familiar with procedure for obtaining and maintaining an adequate supply level in the OPS Unit. Must be familiar with the contents of the crash cart and ensures that the cart is checked daily.

Provides appropriate care for all age groups as it relates to growth and development.

Must be familiar with the pre-op interview program and is able to conduct a pre-op interview if necessary. Must be aware of pre-op requirements. Must screen the patient’s chart pre-operatively with knowledge of how to obtain data, who should be made aware of abnormalities, and where the chart is sent for review.

Performs other job related duties as assigned by Director.
