DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Marine Biology Research Division (MBRD) consists of research groups broadly in the fields of cell and developmental biology, ecology, evolutionary, and conservation biology, microbiology, and the physiology of marine organisms that encompasses more than 20 laboratories. Cell and Developmental Biology: biochemistry, functional genomics, ecotoxicology, and morphogenesis of marine invertebrates, including sea urchin, corals, and mollusks. Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology: phytoplankton ecology, coral reef ecology, evolution and development of marine invertebrates, conservation of marine organisms and habitats. Microbiology: diversity and distribution of marine viruses, bacteria, and phytoplankton, including symbiosis with marine animals, biogeochemistry, secondary metabolite production, and microbial adaptations to environmental extremes and other environmental stressors. Physiology: biomechanics and locomotion, sensory biology, bioluminescence, and biochemistry of marine animals, including host-symbiont relationships

JOB DESCRIPTION

Under the general direction of senior researcher, provides scientific guidance and assistance with implementation, design and monitoring of a field sites and studies including but not limited to environmental, social or biological science disciplines. Requires an experienced professional who knows how to apply financial and scientific theory and put into practice with in-depth understanding research operations. Coordinates with project leaders in preparing and planning remote location research activities, procurement, and required field research commodities. Responsible for assessing and monitoring policies and procedures for remote field sites and research studies. Evaluates and investigates opportunities for improvement. Participates in field trips, mainly in Mexico, to obtain and record fisheries and mangrove data, to perform sampling techniques, perform financial natural services analyses, and to take video and images recordings. Responsible for identifying and obtaining all required approvals for program operations in Mexico and other site locations. Analyzes data and provides input to reports and plans to meet regulatory requirements consistent with research protocols and objectives. Function as the liaison between the Aburto Lab and the Biology Section Business Office. Documents activities and follows up in accordance with relevant policies and regulations. Responsible for documenting budgets for the grants related to the lab, preparing monthly expense reports, opening purchase orders for contractors, and submitting subsequent invoices for payment. Communicates with contractors, resolves problems with vendors, initiates correction requests, and documents resolution of problems. Coordinates planning of meetings, events, and travel-related activities. Supports team to establish procedures and logistics, serving as an intermediary for faculty, and researchers with other campuses as well as with suppliers, subcontractors, and companies.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Language fluency in Spanish.

  • Ability and willingness to travel on a monthly basis.

  • AAUS Scientific Diver certification for underwater assignments.

  • Two (2) or more years of progressively responsible professional experience in finance, natural resource economics, or related discipline(s) and working knowledge of conservation and sustainability trends.

  • Knowledge of fisheries and mangroves in the Gulf of California.

  • Thorough knowledge of safety, legal, cultural and regulatory requirements relative to field research responsibility. Familiarity with federal, state, and private agency contract and grant regulations.

  • Thorough knowledge of research discipline, principles, concepts, analysis and / or operations being conducted at field / remote sites.

  • Thorough knowledge of local customs and operations at field / remote sites. Understanding of Mexico's government sectors and international commitments as related to marine conservation.

  • Strong research and analytical skills.

  • Strong computer skills, including experience using Google and Microsoft Office suite. Experience using ArcGIS and Adobe Premier Pro.

  • Strong interdisciplinary research capabilities including the ability to source, analyze, synthesize, and interpret a broad range of economic, financial, and scientific data and information.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform mathematical computations and knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices related to purchasing and fiscal activities. Experience with budgets and expense reports.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to foster effective collaboration within highly matrixed, cross-disciplinary, and geographically and culturally diverse teams and/or organizations to achieve shared goals.

  • Proven ability to develop and maintain strategic relationships and partnerships with remote research partners.

  • Fluency in impact, sustainable, and/or development finance approaches, strategies, and trends across geographies and asset classes.

  • Strong communication skills with research partners and project team members. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal; and ability to work with a diverse group of people at various levels, utilizing tact and diplomacy.

  • Strong attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and manage changing priorities while following tasks through to completion.

  • Proven ability to work in ambiguous conditions and take relevant responsible action as required.

  • Proven ability to work independently and with a team, and to meet deadlines with minimal supervision.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $48,900 - $102,300 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $23.42 - $48.99

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
