The National Forecaster Development Group supports the Bureau's weather forecasting programs through the training and assessment of professional staff. The Group is principally responsible for the development and delivery of specialised training and assessment for forecasting staff but also contributes to other BMTC courses such as the Graduate Diploma in Meteorology course and the Introduction to Meteorology course.
The occupant of the position will work in a team primarily responsible for the Tropical Cyclone competency training and assessment portfolio, but will be expected to contribute to other competency portfolios and BMTC courses as required. The key duties of this position are the training and assessment activities associated with the given portfolio, including the innovation, development and delivery of new learning materials congruent with the latest science and service changes, educational best practice and organisational needs. As such, the occupant will be expected to have a broad knowledge and experience in operational meteorology, particularly as applied to a given portfolio. A good understanding of Bureau operations (including current operating systems and software) is necessary, and the successful candidate will be expected to maintain their operational experience and further develop their subject matter expertise.
A measured but flexible approach to training and education is preferred. The occupant will be required to assess candidates, including monitoring and reporting performance using standards and practices aligned with international requirements (WMO), national requirements (Standards for Registered Training Organisations) and organisational requirements (competency frameworks).
An industry accredited adult education qualification, equivalent to at least Certificate 4 level is currently a requirement of undertaking training and assessment activities. Holding a Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment is an advantage, but if not already held provision will be made to obtain the qualification soon after appointment. A Graduate Diploma in Meteorology or a comparable overseas qualification is also a requirement.
